Best AI Coding Plan for Your Usage: Monthly Costs (2026)
The best AI coding plan depends on your monthly calls. Six usage profiles priced at API list prices and matched to published plan allowances, with the arithmetic and when to switch.

The best AI coding plan depends on how many model calls you make per month, not on the brand. At vendor list prices one typical agent call costs about 0.1 cent on a cheap open model and about 1.4 cents on Claude Sonnet 5.5. That puts a hobbyist under $4 a month, a daily developer between $3 and $60, and a heavy agentic user between $50 and $1,100, depending on the model. Prices are as of 4 October 2026.
How many tokens does coding with AI use in a month?
Vendors count calls to the model, not your prompts. One prompt to an agent can trigger many calls: Alibaba says simple tasks use 5–10 calls and complex ones 10–30 or more. OpenCode's per-model estimates run from 300 to 1,050 fresh input tokens, 32,500 to 89,000 cached input tokens and 120 to 310 output tokens per call. Command Code's typical call is 700 to 1,000, 42,000 to 56,000 and 125 to 200. We use one round call for every model: 1,000 fresh input, 50,000 cached input and 200 output tokens.
| Profile | Assumption | Calls per month | Tokens per month (input / output) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Occasional hobbyist | 20 tasks × 10 calls | 200 | 10.2M / 0.04M |
| Budget-first student | 20 days × 5 tasks × 10 calls | 1,000 | 51M / 0.2M |
| Daily solo developer | 22 days × 10 tasks × 15 calls | 3,300 | 168M / 0.66M |
| Team of five | Five daily developers | 16,500 | 842M / 3.3M |
| Heavy agentic user | 22 days × 8 hours × 4 agents × 85 calls an hour | 60,000 | 3.06B / 12M |
| Privacy-first or local | Daily-developer volume, on a model you host or a zero-retention route | 3,300 | 168M / 0.66M |
These are our assumptions, not measurements. Long Claude Code sessions run larger contexts than 50,000 tokens, so treat the heavy figure as a floor.
What does each profile cost at API list prices?
Cost per call = (1,000 × input price + 50,000 × cached price + 200 × output price) ÷ 1,000,000. We ignore cache-write surcharges, so real Anthropic and OpenAI bills run slightly higher. Prices come from Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek (peak rates) and Z.ai, plus OpenCode's list for Kimi K3 and MiniMax's page for M3.
| Model | Per call | Hobbyist | Student | Daily dev | Team of 5 | Heavy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $0.0180 | $3.60 | $18 | $59 | $297 | $1,080 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $0.0140 | $2.80 | $14 | $46 | $231 | $840 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $0.0090 | $1.80 | $9 | $30 | $149 | $540 |
| Kimi K3 | $0.0210 | $4.20 | $21 | $69 | $347 | $1,260 |
| GLM-5.3 | $0.0153 | $3.06 | $15 | $50 | $252 | $917 |
| MiniMax M3 | $0.0035 | $0.71 | $3.54 | $12 | $58 | $212 |
| GLM-5.3-Flash | $0.0018 | $0.35 | $1.75 | $5.78 | $29 | $105 |
| DeepSeek V4.1 Flash | $0.0008 | $0.17 | $0.84 | $2.77 | $14 | $50 |
Which plan fits each usage profile?
A plan fits when its published allowance for your model covers the cost above. Vendors that publish no dollar amount cannot be checked this way, so we say so.
| Profile | Plans whose published allowance fits | Arithmetic |
|---|---|---|
| Hobbyist, $0.17–$2.80 | Pay as you go, free tiers, Command Code Go ($1) | A $20 OpenCode Zen balance covers about seven months of Sonnet-class use ($20 ÷ $2.80) |
| Student, $0.84–$14 | Copilot Student (free, verified students), Command Code Go, OpenCode Go ($10) | Go's GLM-5.2 limit is $60 against $15.28 needed for 1,000 calls |
| Daily developer, $2.77–$69 | Copilot Pro+ ($39), OpenCode Go, Command Code GOAT ($10) on open models | Pro+ gives 7,000 credits, $70, against $46 for Sonnet; Pro gives $15, enough for 1,071 calls. Go: GLM-5.2 $60 fits $50, Kimi K3 $15 does not fit $69 |
| Heavy agentic, $50–$1,080 | OpenCode Go Plus ($40), Command Code GOAT on cheap models; Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro for frontier models | Go Plus: DeepSeek V4.1 Flash $120 fits $50, GLM-5.3-Flash $180 fits $105, MiniMax M3 $180 misses $212 |
| Team of five, $14–$347 | See the team table below | Copilot Business pools 1,900 credits ($19) per seat |
Claude, ChatGPT, Google and Cursor publish no dollar allowance, so you test them with your own dashboard. One data point: the founder's ccusage export for a Max 5x plan, ten weeks to 4 October, shows $113 to $3,205 a week of API-equivalent value, averaging about $420 a week in the last two. A $840 Sonnet-class month is $194 a week. That is one account, not a promise, and Anthropic can change limits.
Windows matter as much as monthly totals. OpenCode Go caps each model at 20% of its monthly limit per five hours and 50% per week. On cheap models the caps rarely bind: the heavy user's DeepSeek V4.1 Flash month is about $11.50 a week against a $60 weekly cap on Go Plus. On expensive models they bind fast: OpenCode estimates 110 Kimi K3 requests per five hours on Go, which one agent at 85 calls an hour uses up in about 78 minutes. Command Code's GOAT caps are $14 per five hours and $35 per week. For plan details see our guide to the newer plans.
What does a team of five pay?
| Plan | Five seats per month | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Team Standard | $100 annual, $125 monthly | More usage than Pro, not quantified |
| ChatGPT Business | $100 annual, $125 monthly | Codex and ChatGPT, shared credits |
| Copilot Business | $95 | 1,900 credits per seat, extra at $0.01 |
| Cursor Teams | $200 | Premium seats are $120 each for 5x Agent limits |
| Devin Teams | $280 | $80 plus $40 per full seat |
| OpenCode Zen | Usage-based | Spend limits per workspace and member |
Seat prices come from Anthropic, OpenAI, GitHub and Cursor. At list prices the team's Sonnet-class month is $231 and an open-model month is $14 to $58. Copilot Business returns 1x, so its seat price is a floor, not a discount; the value is administration. OpenCode lets only one member per workspace subscribe to Go, so teams use Zen.
What if you need privacy or local models?
Privacy depends on terms, not on the plan tier. Anthropic's consumer plans list model training as opt-out, and Team and Enterprise do not train on your content by default. Google's Gemini API free tier says its data may improve Google's products. OpenCode Go lists zero retention for most models, 30 days for Grok and GPT Luna, and training on your prompts for the Muse Spark Contributor models. Command Code enforces zero data retention when you set CMD_ZDR=1. For full control, run a model on your own hardware through Ollama, LM Studio or llama.cpp; the cost is hardware and electricity, which we do not estimate because it depends on model size.
When should you switch plans?
- Your usage sits below break-even. Break-even calls = plan price ÷ cost per call (our subscription vs API guide has the Claude version). $20 ÷ $0.014 is 1,430 Sonnet-class calls a month. Below that, pay as you go costs less unless the plan allows more than $20 of API-equivalent use.
- You hit a limit twice in a month. Add credits (Copilot charges $0.01 per credit and bills only the price difference when you upgrade) or move up one tier.
- Your model mix changed. Kimi K3 has a $15 monthly limit on OpenCode Go against $60 for cheap models, so moving one tier of work to a cheaper model gives four times the headroom.
- The vendor changed the rules. Fable moved to usage credits in July, Copilot moved to AI credits around 1 June, Command Code's Go plan changed on 28 September, and Gemini CLI ended for individuals on 18 June. Re-check every quarter and prefer monthly billing while rules move.
Can you mix a subscription with cheap API models?
Yes, at the tool level. A gateway such as My Claude Code maps Opus, Sonnet and Haiku slots to different providers. Claude Code's gateway documentation says a gateway credential replaces your subscription login and bills per token, so a gateway mix is an API-key mix. Keep each subscription in the vendor's own client, which Anthropic's terms require for Claude plans, and check every provider's terms.
An example at the daily-developer volume: 10% Opus calls (330 × $0.018 = $5.94), 30% GLM-5.3 (990 × $0.0153 = $15.13) and 60% DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (1,980 × $0.0008 = $1.66) cost about $23, against $46 on Sonnet alone. Quality differs by task, so test the split. Our post on cutting LLM costs shows how routing by difficulty is evaluated, and the plan comparison lists every price.

Frequently asked questions
- Which AI coding subscription should I buy?
- Start from your monthly call count. A hobbyist at about 200 calls pays under $4 a month at API prices, so pay as you go or a free tier is enough. A daily developer at 3,300 calls needs roughly $3 to $60 of usage depending on the model, which fits Copilot Pro+, OpenCode Go or Command Code GOAT. Heavy agentic use needs $100 to $200 tiers.
- How much does AI coding cost per month?
- At vendor list prices and our assumed call of 1,000 fresh, 50,000 cached and 200 output tokens, 3,300 calls cost $2.77 on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, $46 on Claude Sonnet 5.5 and $59 on Claude Opus 5.5. Subscriptions change that: Copilot Pro+ gives $70 of credits for $39. Your real number depends on context size and model mix.
- What is the cheapest way to use AI for coding?
- For light use, pay as you go on a cheap open model: 200 calls on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash cost about $0.17 at peak rates. For steady use, dollar-allowance plans such as OpenCode Go ($10) or Command Code GOAT ($10) return up to 6x to 7x list-price usage on selected models. The cheapest option depends on the model, so price your own calls first.
- Is a subscription cheaper than the API for coding?
- It is cheaper when your usage exceeds break-even: plan price divided by your cost per call. At Claude Sonnet 5.5 list prices, $20 buys 1,430 calls. Below that, the API costs less. Above it, a subscription wins only if the plan allows more than $20 of API-equivalent use, which Anthropic, OpenAI and Google do not publish, so test it on your own dashboard.
- How many requests does a coding agent make per task?
- It varies with the task and the tool. Alibaba's Coding Plan documentation says simple tasks typically use 5–10 model calls and complex tasks 10–30 or more. Vendors such as OpenCode and Command Code publish a typical call as roughly 1,000 fresh input tokens, 50,000 cached input tokens and 200 output tokens, which is why cached input dominates the cost.
